In this video I show how to make your own Coconut Milk at home. Why should you make your own – first, it’s much less expensive to make your own Coconut Milk and second of all, the products that we buy in the stores often have fillers that we just don’t really need to be taking in.

How to Make Coconut Milk Transcript

Hi, there. I’m Julie Hutsell-Starling. Today I’m here to show you how to make your own home made coconut milk. I’m super excited to do this, I’ve been experimenting for a little while now on how to make my own stuff. Because I normally would buy coconut milk in the store, but I was always troubled by the ingredients that were in the containers that come with it. For instance, this brand and most brand they are all pretty much the same. This has organic coconut milk in it, but then it also has calcium phosphate, magnesium phosphate, guar gum, xanthan gum and a whole host of other vitamins that they add in to enrich the product. The xanthan gum and the guar gum are both fillers.

They use them to make it thicker, but then also to keep it from separating. They are just extra things that we don’t really need in our food. Then, the other way that you can buy coconut milk is in a can. The problem with canned goods in general is that the liners of the cans have BPA in them. If you’re not familiar with BPA that’s Bisphenol A. That’s a known hormone and endocrine disruptor. Whatever we can do it’s best to avoid having BPA in whatever we eat. Now, there are a couple of brands that are BPA free and this is supposed to be one of them and then there are a couple of others like I said out there. In general, it’s nice to just be able to be empowered to know that you can make your own at home.

The ingredients you need for this are very simple, you need shredded coconut right here and you need water. The ratio of coconut to water is really up to you. I’m going to be doing one cup of coconut to two cups of water. That’s going to give me consistency relative to what you would buy in a container like this. If you are making a curry and you want the consistency more of a canned full fat coconut milk then I would do probably about one cup of shredded coconut to about one and a half cups of water. You can really just play with it and see what works best for you. The other thing that I wanted to just mention is that when you buy the shredded coconut, make sure that it’s not sweetened.

Make sure it’s just coconut. For instance, the ingredients on organic coconut which has been dehydrated and shredded that’s all it should be. There shouldn’t be any sweeteners in it. Okay? What we’re going to do is, the other thing that you need is of course is a high speed blender. The most common ones are Vitamix and Blendtec. If you don’t have one of those but you have another high speed blender that’s awesome. If you don’t have high speed blender that’s okay too, you’ll just probably need to blend it for a little bit longer to make sure it’s creamy and well mashed together, well-blended. We’re going to add the coconut to the blender and now I’m going to add the water to the blender. Okay, now we’re going to blend. I usually do it for about two minutes.

Okay, now that it’s all blended up we are going to use a nut milk sac which is this right here and I bought this on Amazon.com. This brand is called Rawsome Creations but there are several other brands out there and of course you can just find whichever one you want to do this with. We’re going to pour the milk now through the bag into this container. I’m just going to wrap it around here because that way it won’t come loose as I pour it. Pour it in. All of its creamy goodness. Great. You can smell the coconut, it smell so good. All right, now just let it drain and we can help it up by slowly and gently massaging the bag.

You’ll know when you’re about done because you’ll see that the pulp in the bag is starting to separate a little bit and there will be much less liquid coming out like now. This, you can save, the pulp you can save and you can dehydrate it and grind it and you’ll have coconut flour which is very exciting. If you’re not really interested in doing that at the moment then you can of course just compost it or you can also freeze it for later. Now, we have our coconut milk and the way I keep it is I’ll put it in a mason jar and pour it in here. Good, they really smell like coconut so if you love coconut and coconut milk you’re going to love this. This is it.

It will stay in the fridge for up to about four days, three or four days and like I said it will separate once it cools off but that’s okay. Just shake it up and you’ll be able to use it. I use it as a base in my smoothies or as I said for any type of cooking as well. That’s it. I hope you enjoy it.
