Thinking about acupuncture but turned off by the needles? You are not alone – This video will show how small the acupuncture needles really are.
Don’t want to watch the video? Here is the transcript of Acupuncture Needles Demystified.
These are the needles that I most often use. You will notice that they are packaged, one-time use, disposable needles. You should know that there are different sized acupuncture needles. Pictured here are the two sizes I most often use- they are less than the width of two human hairs!
Aside from their very fine thickness, acupuncture needles are painless because they are very flexible- see here how it bends so easily? This allows the needle to move with the skin as opposed to fighting it, allowing for smooth insertion.
Before I insert needles, I prepare the skin where I will be inserting the needles by using a cotton ball soaked in rubbing alcohol to swab the skin.
After I have prepared the area, I find the point, and then quickly insert the needle. You will see that the needle depth is very shallow- no more than a few millimeters.
When I remove the needle, I often use a cotton ball to close the point to prevent bleeding. And once removed, I dispose of the needles in a BioHazard waste container.
I hope you have found this video helpful for allaying your fears. I promise, it won’t be nearly as bad as you think! Bye for now!
